Importance of Understanding Gates and Channels
On your personal Human Design chart this information is displayed in a column of red numbers on the left, and black numbers on the right. This information is sometimes also overlaid on a mandala to create the wheel with planets and hexagrams around the outside, as shown above in the blank rave mandala. Your Human Design profile is an overview of activated (coloured red and/or black) gates in your personal chart. It’s determined according to your birth data and where the planets were positioned in relation to each gate and its six lines, both at the time of your birth and 88 days prior.

If you think about the natural world, it has rhythm built into it. This is the energy of life patterns such as seasons, weather, reproduction, and genetics. The 45/21 is a very interesting energy and can often be a difficult configuration in a relationship. The energies together are about managing and creating resources. This channel is rooted in the Will Center, and the possibility of a willful struggle for control is inherent in this channel. The important thing for both of these energies to realize is that neither one has power without the other.
Focus and concentration is the ability to take the understanding and apply it into action. The next 3 channels are about “doing” logic in groups. The Focus and Concentration of the 9/52 is about learning and doing repetitively so that patterns can be established as collective behavior.
Sometimes people with this energy forget to wait for the invitation or recognition and can push others away with their stories or metaphors. People who have this channel need to understand that there are no answers, only the stories of their experience. This circuit is about the process of living life, not about finding answers or patterns. In order for the big ideas of channel 64/47 to come to fruition, the mindset of possibility and the willingness to wait for the passing of confusion is vital. The 64/47 can be marvellously open to miracles when they understand that the “how” will be delivered when the timing is correct, and no amount of forced thinking will bring it forth.
Channels are the lines that connect two Gates, thereby linking two Centers. A Channel becomes 'defined' when both Gates it connects are colored in your BodyGraph. This results in a constant flow of energy between the two Centers, manifesting as specific traits or behaviors that are consistent within you. There are four primary types of channels in the Human Design System, each with its specific purpose and characteristics.
The gate of friction discriminates and controls emotions and reproduction, governing when we’re open or closed to intimacy, in romantic and platonic relationships. This gate is a wonderful guide for others, with an intuitive knowing of where to lead others to reach their fullest potential. Unconscious gates were imprinted 88 days before the moment of your birth and comprise characteristics you may not recognise in yourself. In Human Design, these columns of numbers are known as profile lines, because they come from the lines of each gate. You’ll see that each one has a number between 1 and 64 (the gate), followed by a period, and a number 1 to 6 (the line of that gate).
